Kerala is a state famous for its ancient art-forms and shastras [sciences]. They are amazingly varied, have essential characteristics of beauty, sheer-joy, rhythm and harmony.
Samskarika- Kala- kendra, our art and cultural center, at Thelliyoor, Kerala, India, offers you an opportunity to know and also learn these unique art-forms in traditional surroundings.
If you are interested in learning any of the art forms ,to learn the basics we recommend classes for a minimum of 14 days.
Languages: We offer Sanskrit ,Malayalam and Hindi language classes. Languages are the way of communication, and knowing a language truly helps to know the culture of people using it.
Art-forms offered:

Padayani: an ancient temple art performed in temples of Godesses in central Kerala mostly during festival seasons. The crown is made from palm-leaves painted using natural materials. Performed to the accompaniment of thappu[a traditional percussion] and Padayani music. (This is offered only at Thelliyoor).

Kathakali: This ancient dance-drama dating back to the 17th century presents mythological themes from the Hindu Epics. This famous dance-form is a combination of traditional make-up, music, musical-instruments and colorful costumes.

Mohiniyattom: This is kerala’s own classical dance done only by women. This simple yet enchanting dance was performed as an offering to the beloved gods. The costume is simple and traditional .This Dance is as graceful as the swaying paddy-fields.
Thiruvathira: A folk dance performed by a group of women in traditional Kerala attire, (Neriyathum Mundum). The songs are usually praises of Hindu Gods and Goddesses.
Kalamezhuthu: Drawing of a deity done on a floor specially set-up. The outline is drawn using rice flour and the picture filled using natural pigments. This is an ancient temple art-form connected with worship of the deity.
Mridangam [a percussion instrument]: This is a drum about 2ft long tapering to both ends. Mostly used for accompaniment to carnatic classical music.
Karnatic Music: This is the south Indian classical music containing 72 Janaka ragas (scales) and many more Janya ragas sung in different rhythms.
Bharathanatyam: is the classical dance form of Tamilnadu dating back to the 10th century ,also very popular in Kerala . This dance is performed emphasizing on the brisk displays of techniques with coordinated movements of eyes.
Cooking Classes: Kerala vegetarian food comprises mainly of curries and snacks which are sweet, hot and also crusty.
